From discovering basketball in Grade 10 to overcoming injury and embracing discipline, here's the untold story of Lwazi Kalenga's journey.

Lwazi Kalenga's basketball journey is built on discipline, resilience, and a passion for competing.

Basketball wasn't always part of Lwazi Kalenga's life.

Unlike many players who grow up with a ball in their hands, Lwazi only discovered the game in Grade 10. What began as something his friends introduced him to soon became a passion that would shape his character both on and off the court.

While his friends introduced him to basketball, there was one person who changed the direction of his journey—his coach, Nica Nicolae.

When Basketball Became More Than a Game

Coach Nica didn't make basketball easy for Lwazi.

Instead, he challenged him.

The two often played one-on-one, and more often than not, Lwazi found himself on the losing end. But rather than becoming discouraged, those battles sparked something inside him.

Every loss became another reason to improve.

Every game became another opportunity to compete.

Looking back, those one-on-one matchups weren't just practice sessions—they were the moments that made Lwazi fall in love with basketball.

The People Behind the Journey

Every player is shaped by the people around them, and Lwazi is no different.

His friends, especially JR, encouraged him along the way, while Coach Nica continued pushing him to become a better player. Away from basketball, his father instilled a lesson that still guides him today.

"Being responsible is doing the right thing when no one is looking."

That lesson became part of Lwazi's identity and continues to influence the way he trains, competes, and carries himself.

Learning Through Setbacks

Lwazi's basketball journey hasn't been without disappointment.

As a young player in Grade 10, he was selected to represent the Johannesburg Under-15 team. It was an opportunity many young athletes dream about.

But his parents wanted him to prioritize school.

Being told to step away from basketball at a time when his passion was growing was heartbreaking. Even as a young player, he had to learn that some decisions are bigger than the game.

Years later, another challenge arrived.

At the peak of his shooting form—when almost every shot seemed to find the basket—Lwazi suffered a serious finger injury. His finger dislocated so badly that it broke through the skin, forcing him to spend months away from basketball.

When he finally returned, nothing felt the same.

For the first time, Lwazi considered quitting the sport altogether.

Instead, he chose to keep going.

Building His Game

On the court, Lwazi Kalenga has built his identity around communication, smart decision-making, and defensive intensity.

He takes pride in being one of the loudest players on the floor, helping teammates stay organized while making the right reads in every situation. Combined with strong positioning and a love for defending, Lwazi believes that impacting the game goes far beyond scoring points.

Basketball has also taught him lessons that extend beyond competition.

It has shown him the value of discipline, living in the moment, enjoying the game, and developing the mindset of a winner.

The Journey Continues

For Lwazi Kalenga, basketball is about much more than wins and losses.

It's about becoming a better person.

From discovering the game in Grade 10 to battling injuries and overcoming disappointment, every challenge has strengthened his character and deepened his love for basketball.

His story is still being written.

And with every practice, every defensive stop, and every lesson learned, Lwazi Kalenga continues building the player—and the person—he set out to become.
